A sermon on Matthew 12:43-45
Out with the old
In with the new
Jesus came to change our affections, desires, tendencies and devotion. Removing sinful patterns and habits from our life does not make us disciples of Jesus; it makes us moral people. Jesus came for more than morality, He came to offer us abundant life, or life to the full. Abundant life is not only emptying our lives of sinful choices, that is only part of it. The totality of abundant life also includes filling our lives with devotion to living as Jesus lived, loving as Jesus loved and pursuing the things of God that Jesus pursued.

A sermon from Matthew 12:38-42
The desire for more
Beyond words
Exceeding expectations
To know who Jesus is one has to look at what He claimed and what He did. Jesus stated often that He was the Son of God; the Messiah who came to save people from their sins. When the Jewish religious leaders could take it no more, and in the fulfilled time of God’s plan, they put Him to death by crucifixion to a Roman cross. That was a Friday. On Sunday all prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus rose from the dead defeating sin and death. With the centurion we can say, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54)

Jesus is the sum total of salvation (John 3:16; 14:6). The Holy Spirit convicts one of sin (John 16:5-11) so that the Father can draw us (John 6:44-47). To speak against the Holy Spirit is to reject salvation.

Jesus is Jesus

God created us, loves us, desires a relationship with us and works in our lives to conform us to the image of His Son Jesus (Romans 8:28-29). Jesus humbled Himself to do the will of His Father (born as a baby; died on a cross) so that we, as God’s children, would do God’s will also in our behaviors and actions toward others.

God is loving, kind, gracious, merciful and compassionate toward His creation. Having created us in His Image, we, as His children, are to act toward one another according to how God has acted toward us. Because of Jesus’ love and sacrificial death on the cross, we have the example, and through Christ living in us, the power and ability to show mercy and compassion to those we see and engage with each day.

The psalmist offers blessing (praise, adoration) to God celebrating the abundant goodness and love the LORD has for His people.
